Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was a frequent visitor to the Hotel Chelsea in New York City where he was fascinated and inspired by the bohemian culture and the famous figures it attracted. Warhol was an American visual artist, film director and producer. His works explored the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and spanned a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and filmmaking.
Warhol’s first major exhibition was in 1962, Warhol painted his famous cans of Campbell’s soup, which he claimed to have had for lunch for 20 years. Warhol began to make paintings of iconic American objects such as dollar bills, cans, Coca-Cola bottles, and celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Mick Jagger and John Lennon. His work became popular and controversial.
