HERE IS DALI
Exhibit at Gallery 23
Hotel Chelsea

In the unlikely event you have never heard of Salavdor Dali, here’s a few tid-bits: Born in Spain in 1904, Dali received his formal education in fine arts in Madrid. Influences include the Impressionists and Renaissance masters. He settled on Surrealism at the age of 21 and quickly became its leading exponent.

Not bounded by the borders of painting, his repertoire included: sculpture, film, graphic arts, animation, fashion, and photography. He also wrote fiction, poetry, an autobiography, essays, and criticism.

He was known for his somewhat eccentric and ostentatious public behavior that (to the dismay of many of his admirer’s and irritation of his critics) often drew more attention than his artwork.

Dali lived a full life and died at the age of 84.
He is quoted as saying:
“When you are a genius, you do not have the right to die, because we are necessary for the progress of humanity.“
Unfortunately for us, he did die and is buried in the town of Figueres, Spain, just 450 metres from the house where he was born.

This exhibit has been curated by the Chelsea’s Visual Arts Director, Crystalina Halostar, who is a long-term resident, supporter and artist of the Virtual Hotel Chelsea and an artist in the physical world. Crystalina carefully selected an assortment of Dali’s works, some you may recognise and others that you may not have seen before
